Sound the Bamboo (BK)
A hymnal of world music gathered from the Christian churches of Asia
GIA is the American publisher of Sound the Bamboo, a hymnal of world music compiled specifically for Asian Christians. An updated version of the 2000 Christian Conference of Asia hymnal, this revised version is filled with indigenous Asian hymns, songs, and ritual music from over 20 different countries representing 40 Asian languages. The majority of the book’s contents come from “grass roots” churches; many of the selections were transcribed in cities and small villages all over the Asian region.
Each song includes a transliteration of the featured language using standard romanization along with the English translation of the text. The editor’s notes offer helpful information regarding pronunciation, notation, and transcription along with a description of musical styles and performance suggestions. Sound the Bamboo also provides thorough indexes for easy and instructive reference. This hymnal truly demonstrates how God’s name can be proclaimed and praised across culture with unity despite diversity.
