John L. Bell

A beginner’s guide to a larger Christ

Not another book about what we already know, but one about what we overlook.

Here, John Bell explores facets of the personal life, relationships and ministry of Jesus which are seldom the stuff of preaching or conversation, but which are all rooted in the Gospels and are necessary if we are to be freed from the passive stereotypes which still dominate thinking about Christ.

Much of the book is rooted in encounters with people on the periphery of religious life and in situations where politeness was not a prerequisite for discussing faith.

John Bell is a member of the Wild Goose Resource Group of the Iona Community, an ordained minister and an occasional broadcaster who lectures and preaches across the globe, working in the areas of liturgy and spirituality.

  1. Lisa Bodenheim

“John Bell is thought-provoking with his irreverent reverence. With great respect and deep love for the Bible, he points out what is right under our nose which most of us either choose to ignore or just don’t notice. He has a lovely, to-the-point style that blends seriousness and humour.” – LISA BODENHEIM, USA.

  2. David Crumm

“If you’re a John-Bell-WGRG-Iona fan, you’ll snap up this new book—and soon you’ll be tearing it apart to pull out John’s fresh ideas. A book jammed with ideas about how people—working together—can roll their sleeves up and discover a far larger Jesus than the little bearded figure in children’s picture books. When I first heard the title, I thought it was a Bible-study book. But, now that I’ve read it, I think it’s more like a workbook—or sourcebook of ideas—for congregations.” – DAVID CRUMM on READ THE SPIRIT, http://www.readthespirit.com

  3. Tony Coxon

“I took it on holiday and read it almost at one sitting. Excellent!” – TONY COXON, UK.
