weeWONDERBOX: A Bag Of Rice Can Change A Life (The Kilombero Story)

21 May 2016 @ 10:30 am - 1:00 pm

Free

Howard Msukwa and Kenneth Mwakasungula talk about how this story is affecting their lives, their hopes for future development and how this change strengthens their communities and their country. John Riches from JTS will set the discussion in the wider context of climate change, the world’s growing demand for food (70% more by 2050) and the future of sub-Saharan Africa’s smallholder farmers (75+% of the population).

Just Trading Scotland (JTS) has been working with a rice farmers’ association in the north of Malawi enabling the farmers to improve their farming practices and opening up new international markets.
For the last 7 years, Just Trading Scotland has been working with a rice farmers’ association in the north of Malawi. During that period they have developed a close relationship which has enabled the farmers to improve their farming practices and has opened up new international markets for Malawi, a vital alternative to the tobacco on which they are presently dependent.

This event is part of the new weeWONDERBOX programme of events.

weeWONDERBOX is a collaboration between the Iona Community and the Wild Goose Resource Group which aims to catalyse public opportunities for participation, conversation and committed engagement for faithful, doubtful and curious folk in Glasgow and beyond.
