weeWONDERBOX: An Iona Community Liturgy of Healing

28 September 2016 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every month that begins at 6:30 pm on day Last of the month, repeating until 28 June 2017

A service of prayers for healing and laying on of hands

Each week between September 2016 and June 2017, weeWONDERBOX offers a weekly Iona Community liturgy. However, on this the last Wednesday of the month, the liturgy takes a slightly different form, that of a service of prayer and action for healing, hope and well-being.

The liturgy consists essentially of two halves.

The first half is a time of prayer when names of people who have requested prayer (both here in Glasgow and on Iona) are read aloud.

In the second half, the act of laying on of hands is offered to those present who wish to receive it … either for themselves, someone they know or a situation for which they have concern.

While the leaders of worship will lay hands on the head or shoulder of those who come forward to kneel and receive this ministry, all others who wish can participate similarly by laying their hand on the person’s shoulder, or on the shoulder of those gathered around. In this way, a web of caring communal touch encompasses each person.

This action, the gift of human touch, is not the skill or preserve of specially trained or charismatic individuals, but of the whole people of God. We believe that it is a communal gift of compassion and we do it because it was one of the last commands of Jesus to his disciples before his ascension.

This and each other event of worship is participative and uses unaccompanied song, music, conversation and simple symbolic action to explore how the Word, our experience, lives and the world intersect.

Each liturgy is led by different members, associates or friends of the Iona Community, with the support of the Iona Community Programme Team and Wild Goose Resource Group.

The service will start at 6.30pm and usually will last around 45 minutes, followed by a time for refreshments, though at times this might be briefer as on many Wednesday evenings the service will be followed by other events or workshops, usually starting at 7.30 and running until 9.30pm. Of course, we hope you might be interested in some of these too.
